Andrew Miller, MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston, attended a recent Network for Animals event in Parliament to learn about the organisation’s campaign to end dog eating in the Philippines.

Andrew Miller said:
“I was horrified to learn of the cruelty involved in the commercial dog meat trade in the Philippines. Defenceless and trusting dogs, many of them stolen pets, are rounded up, transported and slaughtered under appallingly cruel conditions.
“Although the dog meat trade is illegal in the Philippines, with dog meat eating banned nationwide in 1998 via the Animal Welfare Act, approximately 500,000 dogs are still slaughtered annually as the animal protection laws are not enforced.
“I fully support Network for Animals campaign to end this barbaric practice and have added my name to a Parliamentary Early Day Motion (744) which asks that the “…… Government of the Philippines enforce their existing laws which outlaw the dog meat trade thereby eliminating this cruel exploitation of animals once and for all, further calls on the UK Government to offer support and advice to ensure that practice is finally stamped out”.
“I know that many people in Ellesmere Port and Neston care deeply about animal welfare and if they would like to find out more about the Network for Animals campaign can I suggest that they visit the organisation’s website at www.networkforanimals.org ”
Ends 8th February 2010
